Educational and professional background
A native Floridian, Alan D. Johns earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Florida and his Master of Public Administration from the University of North Florida. He began his career in higher education administration at the University of North Florida where he served as chief fiscal officer for academic affairs. During his career, Johns has served as assistant dean for business and finance at Emory University’s Woodruff School of Nursing as well as assistant dean for budgets and financial reporting at Duke University School of Medicine. Prior to joining VCU in 2006, he served as assistant director for the Office of Budget, Planning and Administration at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
VCU service
In the role of assistant vice president for health sciences, Alan D. Johns provides leadership in the areas of financial planning, administration and reporting, as well has human resource management, space utilization, and performance outcome planning and evaluation for the MCV Campus. He works with the senior leadership of VCU Health Sciences’ five professional schools, the Massey Cancer Center and VCU’s Monroe Park Campus to meet the strategic objectives of the division and the university. As chair of the chief business officer’s council for the MCV Campus, he works closely with business officers and fiscal administrators to discuss continuing and emerging fiscal/administrative issues at VCU as well as unique issues within VCU Health Sciences.
